Task Force for Encouraging Talent to Return to Macau holds Third Meeting of Year

Hosted by Lao Pun Lap, the convener of the Task Force for Encouraging Talent to Return to Macau, the group held its third meeting of the year at the Tertiary Education Services Office (GAES). Group members discussed local medical professionals returning to Macao for employment and how to persuade talent to return to Macao.

In the meeting, members discussed the issue of local medical professionals returning to Macao for employment. The Health Bureau - at the request of the Talent Development Committee - provided data on local registered doctors who had obtained medical qualifications from various regions. The data reveals that between 20th December 1999 and 21st August 2014 some 2,145 doctors were registered in Macao, with medical qualifications issued in different locations, including Mainland China, Portugal, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Japan and so on. In particular, Mainland China accounted for 88%, while Portugal accounted for 5% and Taiwan accounted for 3%.

Members agreed with the Health Bureau that it could accept local residents who obtained medical qualifications from different countries or regions based on various school systems to take up public positions or register to be local doctors. They believe that such a scheme could attract local medical professionals returning to Macao for development, helping alleviate the intense pressure on local doctors and enhance medical services and levels.

On the other hand, members were concerned that many local students studying overseas prefer to remain there for employment and development. They also noted that GAES has conducted investigations and follow-up studies on further education and the employment of local higher education graduates. The group will contact GAES for relevant information and believes it could provide them with reference for the formulation of policy to convince talent to return to Macao.

Members attending the meeting included: convener Lao Pun Lap, Ung Choi Kun, Chan Mei Yi Melinda, Lao Chi Ngai Frederico, Liang Baijin, José Manuel de Oliveira Rodrigues, Tai Wong Kuai Leng and Sou Chio Fai.
